Seungho’s frantic search for Nakyum continues in the one hundredth episode of Painter of the Night. Jihwa finds his big boy shorts with a quick assist from Nameless, and Seungho never loses his grip on his sword.
This episode’s pitched tension doesn’t let up for a single panel, and it was one of the shortest on record. I don’t think a long episode would have been sustainable considering the fraught and intense pitch of this hot frenzy we’re currently in.
Master Min’s playful facade drops even further, and we see a shrill and perverse man who continues to gaslight Jihwa relentlessly. Oh I do hope next episode brings the piercing of his abdominal wall by Seungho’s Sword.
Commanding Jihwa to rape Nakyum, is an absolutely vile thing to attempt. Here, Minn wants Jihwa to continue deep into his culpability, so he (master Min) can continue in his deniability.
But as I knew it, and as I said in last week’s log “E99, O Smiling Damned Villain”:
I believe Jihwa will help Seungho find Nakyum. For no other reason that he had true feelings for Seungho, and he knows (via his own premonitions and Seungho’s behaviour) that losing Nakyum would destroy Seungho. And while that is clearly what Min wants (WHHYYYYYYY? SO much fucking why?), Jihwa never wanted any such thing.
In this context, Jihwa’s already battered and fractured conscience is likely to pull itself together, put on it’s big boy jockey shorts and go help Seungho.
I kinda like being right about Jihwa all along. Despite his petty and childish behaviour in Season 1 and Season 2, it has been clear since E61 “Cold In The Snow”, first that Jihwa’s feelings for Seungho were always real, and second, that had more integrity than first appeared. I’ve been marking it from the beginning, and have said it over and over: Jihwa is not a bad fella, he’s just extremely weak.
But not in this episode. He flat out refuses to participate in Master Min’s wickedness, and of course, Nameless is there to give him a slight assist.
And Jihwa takes it! He goes and finds Seungho.
And my boy Seungho… poor dude. His utter panic and strain standing in Inhun’s hut, declaring, “It’s not him. It’s not.” We know it’s not, but you can feel how anguished and determined that it will not be him, radiating off every single stroke of byeonduck’s pen.
The close ups of his face while touching the dried blood on the floor, and his grip on his sword… GAH! Too many emotions! Let’s go Seungho! We’re going to hell to get our baby…. let’s go!
I am doing backflips over Jihwa finally growing a damn conscious and back bone. Not a complete one, mind you, because the first thing he did was beg No Name to handle it for him.
Luckily, No Name came in with that good information and Jihwa didnt hesitate to do the right thing for once.
The situation with Na-Kyum has me nauseous, because once again Min’s forethought is showing. Various drugs and scary looking toys prepped for this occasion; I’m seeing red. But on this note, I’ve seen a lot of the discussion over how the next episode might go down, and how many will drop this if the worst happens.
While I get where people are coming from ( the story line has been leading more towards happiness and warmth) the overall theme never changed and the creator never promised some fairytale happy ending.
It’s always been raw and emotional, with darker themes.
While I will be absolutely wrecked/devastated/distraught, I will pull up my big girl britches and come right back to watch M’Lord wreck absolute devastation on their asses. Plus, 100 episodes have been read and purchased; I’ll be damned if I don’t ride this entire snot fest out all the way through.
Nous roulons à l’aube, chiennes!
